Poldark Finale

Poldark Closure

The final season on PBS
All good things must come to an end, and it’s time to say farewell to the hugely popular Poldark series. Back in 2015, the BBC commissioned five seasons of the 18th century Cornish costume drama based on the best-selling novels of Winston Graham. Having already been broadcast in the UK, the fifth and final season will now air on PBS at long last. The wait is over, and it’s the bittersweet beginning of the end for American fans of dashing Captain Ross Poldark et al.

The final storylines feature the same great stuff that’s kept us glued to our screens for four seasons already: stunning scenery, Aidan Turner, romance, rivalry and betrayal, Aidan Turner, dramatic duels to the death, gorgeous gowns, pointy hats, and of course Aidan Turner.

Having seen series five via the BBC earlier this year, I’m happy to share a few little secrets (don’t panic - this blog post is a spoiler-free safe space): since the shocking end to season four, life and times have moved on. It is now 1800, and with revolution in the air, Ross is busy righting wrongs and wrangling with politics and corruption in London, while George’s grief for Elizabeth takes a surprisingly spooky turn (dear viewer - you may even start to feel sorry for him!). New characters include a feisty, fighting Irishman, and Demelza is left to grapple with sneaky smugglers, star-crossed lovers and the challenges of a changing world at the start of a new century.

Yes, the conclusion to the swashbuckling saga has everything we’ve come to love and expect from Poldark, and then some. It’s the end of an era, a fitting finale, and brilliant telly.
