Well, the Scottish crime drama is back on BritBox with a brand new series and a brand new sleuth shipped over to the islands: DI Ruth Calder, played by Ashley Jensen. Yes, Agatha Raisin is still solving murders, but minus the funny bits and definitely minus the glamorous outfits and stiletto shoes. With all the other familiar faces still at Lerwick police HQ and the same stunning scenery, you’d be forgiven for forgetting all about Jimmy Perez in less than a highland heartbeat.

Series 8’s storyline revolves around stolen drugs money and a local girl on the run from London hitmen. Downton Abbey’s Phyllis Logan pops up in a very different role as a crime family matriarch (certainly no trace of Mrs Hughes here). In Perez’s absence, it’s great to see DS Tosh (Alison O'Donnell ) promoted and blossoming as temporary boss while still maintaining her lovely, lilting voice, gentle ways and puffy anoraks. If I ever get arrested for murder, please let it be by someone as nice as Tosh.

And of course there’s the mysterious newbie DI Calder; a former islander herself, arriving with a ferry-load of emotional baggage and unfinished business on Shetland. As Tosh explains how the isles are famously treeless (the harsh climate, soil conditions and salt spray make it difficult for shrubs to take root and thrive) viewers are left wondering will Ruth be strong enough to reestablish herself on Shetland, or be blown away like a wee sapling in the wind.

As always, the photography and scenery are spectacular, and of course, the real secret of Shetland’s success is its setting; the remote bleakness of the islands as a backdrop to the gentle pace and rural idiosyncrasies of characters and plot. A landscape of such brutal beauty, it never ceases to take your breath away.
Detective inspectors may come and go, but much more rugged and enduring than mere actors, the true stars of Shetland are the stunning Shetland Islands themselves. No change there.

All episodes of Shetland series 8 - streaming on BritBox now.

Stonehouse

https://www.britishbanterinatlanta.com/telly-posts/stonehouse

https://www.britishbanterinatlanta.com/telly-posts/stonehouse#comments

Uncategorized

The Rise and Fall of John Stonehouse -an enjoyable BritBox political romp Photo credit: BritBox, used with permission BritBox’s Stonehouse is an entertaining 3-part mini-series that delves into the life and times of the disgraced British politician who faked his own death in the 1970s. Emmy winner Matthew Macfadyen stars as the ambitious and determined Labor MP who hatches a daring plan to escape his mounting financial woes and political scandal.
The series traces Stonehouse's rise to power, from a humble background to becoming a powerful politician with a taste for luxury and a fondness for the ladies. Macfadyen captures the nuances of Stonehouse's personality, bringing out both his charisma and his flaws. He imbues his character with a magnetic charm that makes it easy to see how Stonehouse was able to captivate the British public as well as his Parliamentary colleagues.
As the plot unfolds, the series delves into Stonehouse's complicated personal life, his extramarital affairs and his financial troubles, which eventually lead him to take drastic measures to escape his problems. As political scandals go, this one is pretty outrageous. At one point, Stonehouse is even mistaken for Lord Lucan, and given the timing and context,
that’s not actually as absurd as it might sound.

Keeley Hawes is absolutely magnificent as always, playing saintly Barbara Stonehouse, the archetypal politician’s wife, standing loyally beside her man through thick and thin. The fact that she and Macfadyen are real-life husband and wife makes this on-screen partnership even more fascinating.

The tone is light-hearted throughout and Stonehouse features laugh-out-loud moments with witty quips from the likes of Harold Wilson, believe it or not, to lift the mood. I particularly enjoyed the 70s styles and fashions, and a script that is refreshingly un-sweary too.

Overall, Stonehouse is a must-watch for anyone interested in political drama and the fascinating true story of a man who was willing to risk everything to stay in power. Highly recommended.

Cold Call

https://www.britishbanterinatlanta.com/telly-posts/cold-call

https://www.britishbanterinatlanta.com/telly-posts/cold-call#comments

Uncategorized

Revenge is sweet when you scam the scammers Acorn TV’s Brit drama Cold Call really should come with a viewer warning. If you are watching a series, and say watched episode 5 tonight, go there tomorrow and there is no “continue watching” function. You have to hunt for episode 6 as if starting over. Our favorite shows are Vera (no new content in about 2 years), Shetland (no new content since forever), Line of Duty (now apparently finished) and Grace where they have only shown 2 episodes so far.
